Wedlock – Electronic Heart & Soul

Wedlock – Electronic Heart & Soul by chapelhillbilly

When I first crossed paths with Paul Allgood of the Chapel Hill based electronic/pop outfit Wedlock, he approached me telling me that he’d heard of the blog and was hoping I would give his stuff a listen and see if I thought it was something worth writing about in my blog. How could I say no to that? He’s such a nice guy and I thought sure, why not. As I sat down and followed links that Paul gave me to some of Wedlock’s music, the first thing I thought was “Wow, I know NOTHING about this genre of music. Can I really review this kind of music and give it an honest review?” Well, I reminded myself that music is music. It’s all about opening your ears up and exposing yourself to different sounds. I also remembered having a conversation the previous night about how I always thought it was really upsetting when a journalist would write a scathing review of something and as opposed to being constructive was just mean. Well, that’s not me and here are my thoughts of what I heard from Wedlock. The first link I followed was to a video for the song “Reverend Charisma”.

My first impression of this was that I really didn’t like the video. I don’t tend to like independent videos done for independent artists. I felt like this video tried too hard to bring to life the conceptualized lyrics of this song (about Jim Jones and his infamous Kool-Aid mass suicide cult). I actually wasn’t even that impressed with the song. I finally headed over to the band’s MySpace page where I was actually delightfully surprised at the music that was on their page. The first thing that struck me with these songs is the quality of the production. The songs are very much electronic pop full of subtle effects and floating, ambient vibe. Allgood’s voice is very good and is really well suited for this kind of music. I also envision that he could really throw down some funk if he wanted to but his voice sounds right at home with this kind ambient, electronic soul.

The next thing I did was pay attention to the songs themselves and I actually found them all to be quite good. The two songs that stood out the most to me are “Still Unsatisfied” and “World Machine”, the later being my favorite of the two. Again, I was really impressed with the amount of detail that goes into the production of these songs. It’s obvious that Paul Allgood has a passion for making quality electronic music and putting his heart into. I can tell by listening to this stuff that he puts everything he has into this and that is the spirit and essence of a true musician.

So overall, Wedlock is a great electronic band. Am I a converted fan of the electronic genre? Not really to be totally honest. I’ll take an acoustic guitar and live instruments any day but again, that does not make Wedlock a bad band or electronic music “not good”. There is an audience for this and I hope he finds the success he truly deserves in this over saturated world of music! Head on over to www.myspace.com/wedlockmusic and check them out and also swing by http://wedlockmusic.com/tour.htm to see when they’ll be performing live in your area!
